Beautiful movie. Go see it. The actress that they found to do this movie is too good to be true. She’s five years old and she’s one tough Hushpuppy. This is magic realism on the bayou, with not-so-thinly veiled references to Katrina and climate change, so the film is both too close to home and fantastical at the same time. One thing that my roommate pointed out was that it helps those of us who haven’t been displaced by disaster understand what motivates people to fight to stay in their homes, while the rest of us wonder why they don’t just get the hell outta there. It’s a powerful, guttural instinct and it grows and explodes in Beasts of the Southern Wild.
